An amazing cure for a discontent heart.
You can’t always reason around emotions with logic. Emotions are of the heart, so they need a spiritual remedy. Something to be repeated over and over. Something to look forward to and be happy about.
This verse offers the long and short-term elixirs for discontentment. The long term is that we’re miserable because we're focused on this temporary world, so Allah re-centers us by saying “Allah is enough for us.” The heart that revolves around Allah is never discontent because there is no shortage of Him. You can always be in His remembrance whenever you want.
But we’re weak and we need something now. So the next part says He will give us from what He has. We’ll get something here in this world. This allows us to enter the joy of expectation. “I wonder what it’s going to be? Maybe what I’ve always wanted. Or maybe something better I never expected.”
Then it closes by reminding us of the only true goal: Allah. Everything else will disappear someday. As the Prophet ﷺ said, “Love whoever you wish, for one day you will be parted.”
In sum, this amazing dua provides the long-term cure, the short-term cure, and the way forward for our hearts.
